Who is censoring now??

Just a letter to the editor:

I recently sent out a tweet asking all councillors in Newmarket to like our page:  www.facebook.com/preserveglenway
We have a website:  preserveglenway.ca

I had expected a yes or no, but this councillor went further.  She seems upset with me because I believe the articles in the Sun that she has written seriously misrepresent Newmarket.  I wrote this letter to the Sun about 3 hours prior to receiving the tweets shown in the picture at the bottom:

The Sunday Sun has featured a guest columnist from Newmarket a few times over the last months, and has left many of us residents wondering. This columnist/councillor insinuates that our town may be corrupt and that townspeople’s main concern is the name of a park. Let me correct her on both counts.
The hot topic in Newmarket is unplanned development on what is now greenspace in stable established neighbourhoods.  This will overtax infrastructure designed to accommodate only the Official Plan.  At a recent Town meeting, which was held at the Newmarket Theatre with overflow in the adjacent high school!, residents repeatedly voiced their opposition to the proposed development on recreational lands.  The number of protesters was larger than most of the recent Idle No More and Occupy protests.
Residents of the town were out in full force to voice opposition to the proposed development of greenspace by Marianevile Developments Ltd .  Marianevile proposes to roughly double the number of households and add a commercial block on greenspace of a 20+ year old neighbourhood. Two councillors; Chris Emanuel and Tom Hempen spoke up for residents, as did the Glenway Preservation Association; www.preserveglenway.ca .  The development is not wanted and will cost taxpayers (infrastructure issues) as well as seriously downgrade the liveability of this area.  The Town should put residents’ interests ahead of newly arrived developers who recently purchased the greenspace, knowing the zoning.  The Town’s Official Plan should be upheld by the Mayor and Council.
Rezoning and development are the key issues facing Newmarket.

And I got this in response.
Why would Madie know about the letter within a few hours and why would she influence the Sun?
The protest against development in Glenway had about 700 people out, more than other protests in the GTA since the G20, and around 3 times the number of protesters that Idle No More has come up with.  And yet, we received no coverage from the Sun or any other media.  Why not?
This info has also been forwarded to the National Post, to motoole and I have not gotten a reply.  Next week, I will try the Star and Globe.

Social Networking Tips for Business

Social networking is the way people are connecting, advertising, marketing, and communicating. Social networking and social media is taking the world by storm. Even if you don't like it or don't understand it, this Internet tool is here to stay and people are using it not only for socializing but for business purposes as well. We offer some social networking tips to make your social and business networking easier and more effective:
Use social media to create an online presence.
Not having an online presence is like not having a business card. In fact, being online is your digital business card. If you don't have a website, a blog, and don't have an online presence people assume that you're either not for real, you're not professional, and/or you're not up with the times and technology which also can meet that you're hard to reach because the business communication may be limited to traditional tactics such as phone calls, faxes, and regular mail. So having a blog site, social networking accounts, and a website is very advantageous for your business. (Hint: There are many free website templates that you can use to create a website and using a free blogging site such was Word Press as your website is perfectly fine.)
Guard your online presence and your social networking presence.
Things posted online can spread like wildfire. Keep an eye on your business' digital/online presence. Every now and then do a Google search as well as use other search engines to see what comes up when you Google your business name. If something negative shows up, use the Internet to combat the negative feedback and/or incorrect content.
Post carefully.
The beauty of the Internet and online is that you can communicate and post very quickly. Yet that is also the downfall as what you post spreads rapidly and many people can view it instantly. They can also quickly repost and retweet as well as comment and rate. So think before you type and post. Think before you hit the "enter" key. Using social networking for business means that you must stay professional with a touch of personality. Don't post things that will give you an unprofessional image and reputation. You want to reveal the professional-personable you. A few quotes and friendly comments among the more heavily business posting is the balance that you want to achieve. You don't want your company's social networking to make you wonder what kind of business you're in and you especially don't want them wondering if you're even conducting business. So post carefully.
Upload carefully.
The same rules for post carefully that are listed above apply to what you upload. If you're tempted to post photos of you that you don't want your boss, clients, prospective employer, staff members, target audience and even family and friends to see, you'd better think first. Those uploads can come back to haunt you. They can also be shared with hundreds and thousands of people. So wisely choose what the photos, images, and videos that you upload.
These are just a few tips to make your social networking for business successful and effective. Keep checking back as we add more blogs and articles on the topic of social networking for business purposes.

Social Media

I am startled at the impact of social media on peoples day to day lives.  Having spent my adult working life on a computer, with a computer, inside and all around a computer, I find them the least appealing thing to do at the end of a day.  Don't get me wrong, I love my job, and I love technology...
But at the end of the day, the shoemaker doesnt want to make shoes for his kids and the carpenter isnt making cabinets for his wife.
No, I want to play in a garden, grow things, smell flowers, play music, pick an guitar or bang my piano, paint a picture, sing a song.  Nothing to do with technology, except that, well,

now that I am learning the guitar, I spend inordinate amounts of time listening to pieces on the computer, have a fantastic set of speakers, and love http://www.grooveshark.com/, the greatest site since facebook.

I have a group of friends, whom I will now insult, since they most of all, are unlikely to see this.  They are the Amish of IT, the Luddites of the computer world. Their professional world purposely limits their access to the toys of the 21st century.  --- so what startles me?  That some of these people will check facebook daily, or even weekly, yet often enough, and will have all kinds of personal information about themselves, their community and their lives on it.  They will search their friends out from the corners of the globe and keep in touch in this media, in facebook and with twitter, as if they were born to the tools of this new millenium.

So what does that mean for business?
Facebook is the place to find people
LinkedIn for connections...
Profile yourself,
Connect yourself
Our longing for community supercedes our need for a fresh breeze or sit in a quiet garden in the fading sun of the late winter afternoon.
Community - we are all part of this global soul.
