The greatest class that I have ever had.... for social media

It all started one Friday in Markham.... about 9 am, when some very interesting financial planners and advisors walked into the boardroom.

Social Media

I am startled at the impact of social media on peoples day to day lives.  Having spent my adult working life on a computer, with a computer, inside and all around a computer, I find them the least appealing thing to do at the end of a day.  Don't get me wrong, I love my job, and I love technology...
But at the end of the day, the shoemaker doesnt want to make shoes for his kids and the carpenter isnt making cabinets for his wife.
No, I want to play in a garden, grow things, smell flowers, play music, pick an guitar or bang my piano, paint a picture, sing a song.  Nothing to do with technology, except that, well,

now that I am learning the guitar, I spend inordinate amounts of time listening to pieces on the computer, have a fantastic set of speakers, and love http://www.grooveshark.com/, the greatest site since facebook.

I have a group of friends, whom I will now insult, since they most of all, are unlikely to see this.  They are the Amish of IT, the Luddites of the computer world. Their professional world purposely limits their access to the toys of the 21st century.  --- so what startles me?  That some of these people will check facebook daily, or even weekly, yet often enough, and will have all kinds of personal information about themselves, their community and their lives on it.  They will search their friends out from the corners of the globe and keep in touch in this media, in facebook and with twitter, as if they were born to the tools of this new millenium.

So what does that mean for business?
Facebook is the place to find people

Our longing for community supercedes our need for a fresh breeze or sit in a quiet garden in the fading sun of the late winter afternoon.
